1A: Reading and Writing Graphic Novels

In First Grade we have immersed ourselves in the genre of Graphic Novels! Last week the children had the opportunity to read a variety of graphic novels individually and in pairs.  Today, the children enjoyed listening to a read-aloud of an exciting graphic novel for children called Luke on the Loose.  They thought about the special features of this genre, including speech bubbles, thought bubbles, panels, narrative boxes, and sound effects, and discussed how each of these features help the reader to understand the text.  The first graders also had a chance to look at some wordless graphic novel spreads and added the text to these pages.  When they were finished, they shared their work with a partner.  Tomorrow they will brainstorm ideas for their original graphic novels!
