Our one room schoolhouse day was fantastic! The children lined up outside the classroom and entered to find that the desks were arranged in rows. They found their seats, girls on one side and boys on the other, and were introduced to the rules of the schoolhouse. They enjoyed lessons in reading (from their hornbooks and McGuffy's readers), writing (on slates and in script!), and arithmetic (How many cows does my papa have if he has 7 Jersey cows and 9 Holstein cows?). We continued with a one-room schoolhouse-style recess game of Pom Pom Pull-Away and a special project:making log cabins out of pretzels. Finally, the first graders enjoyed lunch outside in true one-room schoolhouse style, followed by some impromptu square dancing and a game of stickball. Thank you for all of your help in getting your first grader ready for this special day!
