1A: Learning Place Value

Today the first graders were introduced to the concept of place value through the use of base ten blocks and place value charts.  The students worked with manipulatives to represent numbers up to twenty with tens and ones.  The concept of place value is central to the study of mathematics, and by using the concrete-pictoral-abstract method of learning, our first graders are well on their way to developing a strong foundation in this concept.
